Seminar Presentation of the “RES2FIRE” Project

The seminar presentation of the “RES2FIRE – Models and Tools for Enhancing the Resistance and the Resilience to Wildfire in Natural Protected Areas and Wildland-Urban Interfaces” project was successfully held on Friday, December 6, 2024, at the Marathon Road Museum in Marathon, Greece. The project is implemented under the Interreg IPA ADRION program.

The event was organized with the participation of representatives from local authorities, the fire service, academic institutions, the Ministry of Environment and Energy, and other public and private organizations.

The core of the seminar revolved around modern technologies applied within the context of RES2FIRE project, such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), fire prediction and management models, and risk mapping tools.

Speeches and Conclusions

  • Mr. Andreas Vasilopoulos, President and CEO of AVMAP GIS S.A., presented the RES2FIRE project, emphasizing its crucial role as a tool for forest fire prevention and management.
  • Mr. Konstantinos Panitsidis, representative of the TELNAS Lab (Laboratory of Telecommunication Networks and Advanced Services) of the University of Western Macedonia, presented: “The Contribution of the Laboratory of Telecommunication Networks and Advanced Services (TELNAS) to Research and Innovation for Sustainable Development and Environmental Resilience,” highlighting the project’s importance in strengthening the resilience of forested areas through innovative tools that aid in prevention and protection.
  • Mr. Isidoros Madis, President of the SPAY and Mayor of Paiania, underscored the value of collaboration between municipalities and local stakeholders for fire prevention and management.
  • Ms. Maria Leventaki, Deputy Head of the Independent Department of Emergency Political Planning at the Ministry of Environment and Energy, stressed the project’s contribution to policy development for addressing forest fires.

TELNAS Lab Participation

The TELNAS Lab of the University of Western Macedonia actively participates in the RES2FIRE project under the scientific guidance of Professor Malamati Louta, Vice Rector for Administrative and Financial Affairs at UoWM.

The project is implemented under the INTERREG VI-B ADRION 2021–2027 program and is co-funded by the European Union and national resources of the participating countries.
