COOPERATION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN MACEDONIA WITH THE MULTINATIONAL COMPANY HUAWEI
13 December 2021, Kozani · Today in the Senate Room of the University of Western Macedonia (UoWM), the Rector of the University Theodoros Theodoulidis and the EVP of Huawei South Balkan Region for Enterprise Business, Chen Qingwei, signed the participation of the University of Western Macedonia in the Huawei ICT Academy International Programme. The participation in the programme is carried out through its Telecommunication Networks and Advanced Services Laboratory (TELNAS), under the direction of Associate Professor Malamati Louta. As part of the signing ceremony, the Huawei ICT Academy programme was also presented to students at the University in the Amphitheater of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering.
In his welcoming speech, the Rector Prof. Theodoulidis noted that signing the current memorandum is an initial step and that the University looks forward to other cooperations, not only with Ηuawei, but also with other technology companies, in order to enhance technology transfer in the Region of Western Macedonia.
On behalf of Huawei, Mr. Chen mentioned the innovations being developed by the UoWM, and that during his short visit to the city of Kozani, he identified many opportunities for further collaborations, not only through the Huawei ICT Academy, but also in the fields of Green Energy and Innovation Zone. He noted that Huawei together with the University of Western Macedonia can bridge the gap between students and industry needs. He also mentioned that the creation of the ICT Academy is a first sample of Huawei’s determination and commitment to the goal of jointly cultivating talents in the field of ICT through partnerships.
Huawei, a global leader and provider of infrastructure and smart devices Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) provides comprehensive solutions in four key areas: telecommunications networks, information technologies, smart devices and digital services. The University of Western Macedonia, which is one of the first Higher Education Institutions in Greece to cooperate with Huawei, will strengthen its potential, create a direct link with industry and the labour market and open up new opportunities for cooperation on a research level.
The Telecommunication Networks and Advanced Services (TELNAS) Laboratory at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) of the University of Western Macedonia was established in focuses on bringing intelligence, adaptation and cognition in networks and services, as well as to enable accurate knowledge extraction and personalized information provisioning, supporting informed decision making and offering promising solutions in various domains.
The Huawei ICT Academy initiative is a non-profit partnership of Huawei with educational institutions around the world and is aimed at providing knowledge, skills development and certification for students, that are directly related to the industry and the labour market. The programme was established in 2015, is led by Huawei and is implemented through an extensive international network of Academies, faculty and students.
Through the Academy, students at the University will be able to attend courses and take part in the respective certification examinations. Training is provided at no cost for the University and its students and concerns specialised and fast-growing areas related to subjects of study at the University; such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Technology (IOT), Cloud Computing Infrastructure, Big Data Management, Wireless Networks, Information Systems Security, 5G Technologies, and Data Communications, Routing and Switching.
Students will gain access to state-of-the-art technologies, standard industrial equipment and ICT industry simulation tools and will receive extensive theoretical and practical training with online-offline courses and other educational material. To participate in Huawei’s certification examinations, students will receive a discount coupon or even a free entry option.
Additionally, through the Academy, the students will be given the opportunity to participate in international competitions, such as ICT Competition, which is organised each year by Huawei, and claim relevant distinctions. Taking into account the performance of the students, Huawei will offer employment opportunities and/or scholarships. It is worth noting that 150,000 students from 70 different countries participated in last year’s international competition.
Among the objectives of Huawei ICT Academy is also the emergence of talented students than can lead to the digital transformation of enterprises. Specifically, the ICT Talent Alliance Job Fair initiative, organised through the programme, brings students and ICT companies in contact.
